Literacy Eats

Goal: The Literacy Eats program aims to help parents learn to cook new recipes and promote children's literacy skills during food routines (e.g. cooking, eating together, grocery shopping, eating out). Parents take part in one 90-minute session per week where they are introduced to a new recipe and effective strategies that can be used with children to support their literacy. Parents then use role-play to demonstrate how to use these strategies with their children.

Program description: Literacy Eats is a 4-week program taking place in a community center.

Study: In fall 2022, we assembled an advisory board of families to discuss families' needs, preferences, and food practices and solicit families' input on the program's content, materials, and assessments. In spring 2023, we are testing the feasibility of the intervention program with 30-40 new families. Check back soon to learn about the results of this study.

What does this program require of parents? : This program is provided in a community center in Philadelphia where parents will engage weekly in the program sessions.
